Safe and Sacred Training Program

About Safe and Sacred

What is Safe and Sacred?

The following material was provided by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis

Our Children Are Safe and Sacred — September 5, 2013

On August 1, 2013, the Archdiocese of Indianapolis implemented a new program for the care and protection of our children. The new training program entitled, "Safe and Sacred", replaces our current Virtus program.

Purpose of New Program

We have chosen the Safe and Sacred program for several reasons. It provides easier access to child protection training for clergy, employees, and volunteers. It allows us to broaden the focus of the training to increase awareness of all forms of child abuse. Safe and Sacred includes an assessment that must be taken and passed to ensure that training content is learned and can be applied. We believe these are important new features for this program.

Below is more information about this new Safe and Sacred training program:

Feature Safe and Sacred Program Description
Availability 24/7 English and Spanish access online, paper copies available upon request.
Deadline for Completion Before first day of work (new employee)
Time Required for Training 45 Minutes
Focus of Content All forms of abuse (physical, emotional, sexual), neglect
Training methodology 2-3 minute videos, informational slides, personal stories
Assessment of understanding Yes
Online Bulletins Quarterly
Additional Training Programs Internet safety, vulnerable adults, bullying, professional boundaries
Customer Service Hotline Yes

On August 1, 2013, all new clergy, employees, and volunteers who have contact with children are required to complete the training prior to the first day of ministry, work, or volunteer service. Early in 2014, we will begin the re-certification process online for current clergy, employees, and volunteers through Safe and Sacred. We will share more about this re-certification process in January.

The Safe and Sacred link takes you to the home page where you will register by providing your email address and choosing a password. You will then be able to view the website and complete the training.

Since this new program was launched, we have received great feedback on the convenience and education it provides our employees and volunteers. We are pleased to have this new resoure for our continued commitment to the care and protection of our community.

Safe and Sacred Requirements

We are still requiring the three parts of the program as listed below:

  • Safe and Sacred training (replaces VIRTUS)
Note:  This program is designed to increase one's awareness of and recognition of the signs of child physical abuse, child sexual abuse, child emotional abuse, and child neglect. It also provides information on reporting procedures and requirements.
  • Background Check
This is required to screen sex offenders from participating in ministries with children.
  • Code of Conduct Form
This form describes the conduct required of all people working with children, both employees and volunteers.

Please note that all three aspects of this program must be completed! Access to all three are provided on the Safe and Sacred link.
