Our Lady of Guadalupe

Purpose of this Ministry

The purpose of the Committee of Guadalupe is to familiarize our congregation with the Virgin Mary in Her image as Our Lady of Guadalupe and to increased devotion to Her. The Committee organizes the annual December Solemn Mass of Our Lady of Guadalupe and dinner reception.

When is the Celebration of this Ministry?

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12. It commemorates the Miraculous Apparition of the Virgin in Mexico to a humble Indian named Juan Diego, on the hill of Tepeyac from December 9, through December 12, 1531.

More information about Our Lady of Guadalupe can be found at this website dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

How Does This Ministry Prepare for This Event?

The members of this committee organize fundraisers to defray the expenses of the event.

The Solemn Mass is presented with the ceremonial pageantry of the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City; including processions of the Flags of the American Continent, of ministry representatives and children in folkloric attire with their offering of fresh red roses. The Knights of Columbus stand guard to honor Our Lady.

This event has been celebrated annually for more than ten years. In addition to our Parish the committee includes other churches; Saint Rose of Lima, Saints Francis and Clare, Saint Barnabas, as well as, Roncalli High School and Marian College. Throughout the years the ceremony has generated much interest and support and it is well attended.

The Mass is celebrated by several concelebrant priests, also with the valuable participation of the Our Lady of Greenwood parish choir.

When Does this Ministry Meet?

From October to December the members meet on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in lower level Madonna Hall. This event requires much organization. Parishioners are invited to join this very rewarding ministry. Boys and girls ages six through eight are invited to participate in the Mass during the Children's Procession of Roses wearing folkloric attire that is provided by the committee. Parents are invited to register their children during the month of November.
